David began his love affair with painting and creating images, ten years ago - a love engendered at the Bristol School of Art and Design, where he learned the rudiments of drawing, painting and etching.
His paintings, drawings and prints often feature the human form within a scenario that hints at stories to be told. His contemporary studies in oil, acrylic and charcoal reveal his fascination with colour, geometry and context. He is captivated by the possibilities of composition and the extraction of the essence from an interior or a landscape. What he sees is simply the starting point of each picture’s creative journey.
In 2009 he took studio space at Hamilton House, Stokes Croft, Bristol, where he also began to experiment with more abstract pieces. In 2020 he moved into a new purpose built studio in his garden, where he has continued to develop both his landscape and abstract art.
David has had works selected for the RWA Autumn Shows, the Bath Society of Artists Open Show and Clifton Arts Club Open Show. In June 2011 he was one of four artists participating in Art from the Croft at the Parlour Gallery in Bristol. In 2005, his work was exhibited at Wedmore Art Gallery with two fellow West Country artists. He has had two solo shows at the Grant Bradley Gallery Bristol in 2012 and 2014. He has participated in two etching print based shows at the Theatre Collection in Bristol.
David is also a performance poet, who regularly features at poetry and literature festivals in the UK and the USA- davidcjohnsonpoet.com
